RV Carports: Motorhome Clearance, Size & Buying Guide

An RV carport has to clear the real motorhome, fifth wheel, travel trailer or camper envelope—including rooftop equipment and any deployed width you intend to use under cover. Nominal leg height and roof peak are not substitutes for usable clearance.

Start with the RV's real operating envelope

Measure maximum overall length, travel width and maximum height including rooftop equipment. If slides, awnings or side service access will be used under cover, include those operating clearances too. The RV Carport Size Calculator is the dedicated tool for this step.

Current RV products show why “14 ft high” is not enough information

Current exampleStored dimensional evidenceFit implication
Arrow RV 14×29×1413 ft 9 in entrance width; 14 ft 1 in entrance height; 14 ft 7 in ground-to-trussUseful tall-vehicle evidence exists, but the final RV envelope and site still need exact comparison.
Arrow RV 14×38×1413 ft 8 in usable width; 13 ft 10 in conservative entrance height; 14 ft 7 in ground-to-trussDifferent published height fields are preserved separately rather than collapsed into one “14 ft” number.
VersaTube Classic 14×29×1212 ft 1⅝ in ground-to-truss; 14 ft roof width; 27 ft frame length under a 29 ft roofDocumented vertical clearance is useful, but clear width is not stored as verified.
VersaTube Classic 12×33.5×1212 ft 1⅝ in ground-to-truss; 31.5 ft frame length under 33.5 ft roof coverageCoverage length and footing/frame geometry answer different questions.

Width can be as important as height

A narrow RV may fit the travel lane but still leave no room to walk, service components or deploy slides. Conversely, a very wide roof can still have posts or braces that constrain the usable envelope. CarportFit therefore treats overall width, entrance width and usable clear width as separate fields.

For fifth wheels and travel trailers, include the equipment and protrusions that actually remain on the unit when stored. Do not size from a generic “RV class” label.

DIY RV kit or installed RV structure?

Current Arrow and VersaTube examples are shipped kits with exact product pages. Installed RV carports are usually configured around width, leg height, roof style, enclosure and state/service area. The Finder keeps exact products and installed providers in separate result sections.

If you need a lockable utility bay without enclosing the RV travel path, compare Carports With Storage. If you are considering side or end walls around the vehicle itself, review Enclosed Carports before treating panel options as a cosmetic upgrade.

Current RV brand and provider paths

For exact shipped products, start with Arrow or VersaTube. For a professionally installed RV structure, current provider research includes Eagle, American Steel and Alan’s Factory Outlet, with final service and configuration confirmed by location.

Size the RV first, then match products

Do not shop from nominal height alone. Carry the actual RV envelope into the Finder and keep any missing clear-width or clear-height evidence visible.

Weather claims need their conditions

Current Arrow RV research preserves the manufacturer's narrative 100 mph / 35 psf claim only with its anchoring/configuration conditions because malformed structured fields also appear on researched pages. Current VersaTube exact configurations publish their own wind and ground-snow values. Neither is treated as local approval.

Use Snow-Rated Carports and Wind-Rated Carports for the weather-evidence decision, then Anchoring for the load-path condition behind those claims. How We Verify Carport Specifications explains why CarportFit retains source conflicts instead of choosing the most favorable number.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should an RV carport be?

Start with the RV’s actual maximum height including rooftop air conditioners, antennas, vents, solar equipment and other fixed items, then add the overhead clearance you want. Compare that requirement with the lowest documented structural clearance on the travel path.

Is a 14-foot-high RV carport guaranteed to clear a 14-foot RV?

No. Nominal or sidewall height is not automatically the minimum usable passage height. Trusses, eaves and braces can create lower clearance, and some published RV products show entrance heights below or different from other height fields.

How wide should an RV carport be?

Use the widest operating condition that matters. If slides or awnings will be used under cover, include the deployed width plus walking or service clearance; otherwise size from the travel width plus the access clearance you want.

Can I compare RV carports by peak height?

No. Peak height can be much higher than the lowest structural member that the RV must pass under. Full-width usable clearance or a dependable entrance/truss dimension is the relevant evidence.

Does an RV carport weather rating prove it meets my local code?

No. Manufacturer ratings apply under documented configuration and anchoring conditions. Local design loads, permits, foundation and engineering requirements still need location-specific verification.
