Carport Kits: DIY Steel & Aluminum Buying Guide

A carport kit is a shipped structural product, not a synonym for every carport. Compare exact geometry, materials, anchors, assembly and what the price includes before treating two similarly sized kits as equivalent.

Carport kits are a purchase path, not one construction type

The defining feature of this page is shipped/prefabricated, assembly-required structure. Current researched kits include galvanized-steel roof systems, vertical-panel steel products, aluminum/polycarbonate structures and two-post architectural designs. That is why “carport kit” should not be treated as a single material or roof style.

Current kit examples show very different geometry

Current kitDocumented evidenceWhat to verify
Arrow 10×20×79 ft 7 in stored usable width; 6 ft 10 in entrance height; 19 ft 8 in exterior lengthCurrent source conflict makes exterior width unsuitable for hard-fit use; do not replace it with nominal width.
VersaTube Classic 20×20×1020×20 roof coverage; 18 ft frame length; 10 ft 7⅝ in ground-to-truss clearanceClear width still requires exact verification.
Canopia Arcadia 12×21About 11 ft 9⅜ in exterior width × 21 ft 3½ in exterior length; conservative series-level clear minimums storedFoundation and fastener requirements depend on the exact installation surface.
Canopia Arizona Double 16×19About 18 ft 11½ in exterior width with two-post architectureDo not infer two-car usable width solely from the overall width or “Double” name.

What to compare before ordering a kit

Actual footprint

Separate roof coverage, frame/base footprint and overall exterior dimensions. These can matter differently for a slab, fence line, gutter or setback.

Usable clearance

Look for the lowest relevant opening/truss height and a dependable clear width. A tall peak does not create full-width clearance.

Anchoring and foundation

Verify the exact model instructions for concrete, soil, asphalt or other surfaces. Included hardware is not universal approval for every base. Continue with Anchoring, Foundation and, when applicable, Concrete Slab Planning.

What the price includes

Keep shipping, anchors, unloading, hired assembly, site preparation and permits separate. Use the Project Cost Calculator after the product is narrowed.

Shipped kits now also include documented wood/timber-frame carports; compare their post-base geometry and optional assembly separately from steel tube-frame kits.

Use fit evidence before shopping the kit catalog

Size the vehicle first, then compare exact kit records whose dimensions and source limitations are visible.

Kit vs portable vs installed

A rigid shipped kit is different from a portable fabric shelter. It is also different from an installed/custom structure where a provider configures the dimensions, roof, enclosure and location. If the structure type is still open, compare the broader Metal Carports decision first.

If the kit uses an aluminum frame and polycarbonate roof, continue to Aluminum Carports for the material/post-layout tradeoffs. For RV-height projects, use the RV Carports pathway because full-width overhead clearance becomes a critical fit field.

Current shipped-kit brand paths

VersaTube and Arrow are the two deepest current steel-kit families in the CarportFit catalog. ShelterLogic owns the broader merchant/category relationship so exact Arrow product evidence is not duplicated across both pages.

If the protected object is the main unknown, use the application guide before choosing the kit: Boat Carports for the complete trailer/boat envelope or Truck Carports for pickup and work-truck clearance.

Technical and product references

Do not overlook cantilever DIY kits

Some current aluminum/polycarbonate kits use a two-post cantilever layout instead of conventional perimeter posts. See Cantilever Carports when support-side geometry and open-edge access are part of the buying decision.

Frequently asked questions

What is a carport kit?

A carport kit is a shipped, prefabricated structure intended for on-site assembly. The kit can use steel or aluminum framing and steel or polycarbonate roofing; exact components, anchors and foundation requirements vary by model.

Are carport kits always DIY?

They are generally sold as assembly-required products, but some buyers hire local help. Assembly-required does not mean every installation step is suitable for one person or that local permits and foundation requirements disappear.

Is a nominal 12×20 kit exactly 12 feet by 20 feet?

Not necessarily. The label may describe nominal dimensions or roof coverage while exterior, frame and clear dimensions differ. Use the exact model drawing or normalized specifications before preparing a pad or slab.

Do carport kits include anchors?

Some do and some do not. Even when anchors are included, the exact anchor type must match the structure, surface and manufacturer instructions. Do not assume an included anchor package is suitable for every site.

Should I compare carport kits by price first?

No. Compare usable dimensions, roof and frame construction, anchoring, foundation, structural evidence, warranty and included items first. Then use the project cost calculator so shipping, assembly, site work and permits remain visible.
