Carport Size Calculator

Estimate a practical clear planning envelope for one, two or three vehicles from real vehicle dimensions plus the access, storage and overhead room you want. The calculator then maps that envelope to a common nominal carport size class without pretending the nominal label equals usable space.

Size the clear space first

Choose a planning preset or enter the dimensions of the largest vehicle yourself. Presets are intentionally editable and are only CarportFit planning assumptions; measure the actual vehicle before buying a structure.

What this calculator sizes—and what it does not

The calculation is deliberately about the space you need to use, not a structural design. For side-by-side vehicles, the clear width equals the vehicle widths plus outer-side clearance, between-vehicle clearance and any storage/work allowance. For tandem parking, the vehicle lengths are added instead. Front, rear and overhead allowances are then added separately.

InputWhy it mattersHow CarportFit uses it
Vehicle widthBody or mirrors may be the limiting entry/parking dimension.Multiplies by side-by-side vehicle count, then adds access clearances.
Vehicle lengthDetermines parking depth and maneuvering/service room.Uses one length for side-by-side layouts or adds lengths for tandem parking.
Side / between clearanceAllows doors, people and separation between parked vehicles and posts.Added directly to the clear envelope; defaults are planning assumptions, not standards.
Overhead clearanceAllows the vehicle to pass under the lowest relevant structural member.Added to actual maximum vehicle height; never compared only with roof peak.
Site limitsA theoretically comfortable carport still has to fit the property.Checks the planning envelope in both orientations, without pretending to evaluate setbacks or permits.

Why the nominal label is only a shopping class

Manufacturers do not always use a nominal size in the same way. A current Arrow product sold as a 10×15 lists an assembled exterior depth of 13 ft 6 in on its specification table. Canopia's current Oslo 20×40 lists an exterior footprint of about 19 ft 6 in by 39 ft 2 in. VersaTube publishes roof coverage separately from frame length on researched Classic configurations. Those are exactly the kinds of differences that matter when a slab, fence line or vehicle clearance is tight.

For that reason, the calculator may say “20×30 class,” but it does not tell you to pour a 20×30 slab or assume 20×30 feet of clear parking area. Use the class to narrow the market, then verify the exact product drawing, post locations, roof overhang and lowest clearance.

Use the common-size guides as the second check

10×20 carport

Compact single-vehicle class with conventional steel and cantilever examples.

12×20 carport

Strong single-vehicle/product-comparison class with six current normalized configurations.

20×20 carport

Two-car shopping class where clear width and post geometry can matter more than 400 nominal square feet.

20×24 carport

Intermediate-depth 20-ft-wide class when 20×20 is short but 20×30 is more than needed.

20×30 carport

More depth for larger vehicles, tandem use, equipment or a storage zone.

24×30 carport

Wider two-vehicle/custom-installed class with more room for doors and circulation.

30×40 carport

Large multi-vehicle/equipment class where installed configuration and site work dominate the decision.

Turn the clear envelope into a product shortlist

Once the planning envelope makes sense, use the Finder to screen the normalized catalog against the vehicle and site requirements. The live result above carries your entered dimensions into the Finder; you can also open it directly and enter them there.

Frequently asked questions

What size carport do I need for one or more vehicles?

Measure the largest vehicle operating envelope, choose how vehicles will be arranged, then add the side, between-vehicle, front, rear and overhead clearance you actually need. Treat the resulting nominal class as a shopping category and verify the exact product dimensions.

Is a 20×20 carport always large enough for two cars?

No. Vehicle width, mirrors, door-opening space, post locations and the exact usable width can make the same nominal 20×20 class comfortable for one pair of vehicles and tight for another.

Does the calculator use building-code minimums?

No. The default clearances are CarportFit planning assumptions for comparing size classes, not code, accessibility, fire-separation or permit requirements. Replace them with project-specific values where needed.

Why is nominal carport size different from usable space?

Manufacturers may describe roof coverage, frame footprint, nominal length or other dimensions differently. Posts, overhang, braces and roof geometry can reduce or change usable clearance.

Should I include vehicle mirrors in the width?

Use the widest dimension that matters when entering and using the carport. For many vehicles that means mirror width; also add the door-opening or walking clearance you need after parking.
